The 550 In-Line Joint Closures are for use on non-pressurised underground cables including lead sheath and Large Sized Filled Cables. All joints in 550 closures shall be encapsulated with RSS grease (S.513/00042).

BRANCH CABLES:
The kit is designed for 1 cable entry, each end. Branched joints (more than 1 cable at an end) require use of 1 additional branching kit (S.513/00022 or S.513/00097) per added cable. Up to 4 cables, each end may be accommodated.

LEAD SHEATH CABLES:
Lead sheath cables entering heat-shrink material must be prepared correctly. This involves:

  • Removing excess solder or scale from the sleeve bond-line area using a shave hook.
  • Cleaning the bonding area by using a Cleaning Pad supplied in the kit.
  • Fit a continuity wire across the joint opening – solder the wire to the lead sheath (resin core solder).

SCREEN CONTINUITY:
Use screen continuity wire, as supplied. Attach continuity clip to screen of MB sheath. With cables greater than 40mm dia. install 2nd continuity wire. Use type 3 kit, (S.433/00285) for 2nd continuity wire. For lead cables, clean lead sheath with shave hook. Protect joint with heat shield (S.513/00037). Strip approx.15mm insulation from end of continuity wire. Tin stripped wire & lead sheath. Solder wire to sheath using resin cored solder (S.004/00006).

CONNECTOR JOINTING:
Use standard connector jointing practises for In-Line Closures.

INTERFACE JOINTS:
Set up cables as in pits below. Closures may need to be housed diagonally in pits. P5 pits – cables may need to bend (prior to sleeve recovery & no greater than 15° from cable line of centre) from end of canister. In non-insect attack areas, separate & HJ may be removed from cable in pit to approx. 100mm from pit entry & cable accommodated as if it is MB sheath only.
