Optical Fibre and Copper Cabling Systems

High Density Data Centres

Data Centres have become the processing hubs for many applications including virtualisation, cloud computing, convergence, data storage and many other network services. All of these critical applications, plus other low latency, bandwidth intensive applications, require a connectivity solution that provides reliability and resilience for these critical network services.

Delivering reliable, high speed services with zero downtime is the ultimate goal of Data Centre operators. As bandwidth and network speed requirements increase, selecting the right type of connectivity becomes more important.

Major considerations for Data Centre operators often revolve around cooling, power consumption requirements, security, fire suppression systems, redundancy, ongoing operational costs and the overall data centre layout. The Data Centre network topology, server and switch locations as well as the various types of high speed services that will be deployed, impact the location of cable pathways and the choice of connectivity.

With all of these considerations, floor space is often at a premium and this places greater emphasis on selecting an effective high density connectivity solution.

Enabling high speed, reliable connectivity

Optical fibre transmission systems are becoming more widely used and accepted throughout Data Centre and in Enterprise networks, with many systems now supporting 10G links and with migration paths to 40G and 100G also being available.

High speed optical fibre networks in Data Centre environments often utilise MTP®/MPO and LC duplex connectivity throughout the network.

MTP®/MPO connectivity solutions support parallel optic communications, which enables data to be simultaneously transmitted and received over multiple optical fibres. Due to its small form factor, MTP®/MPO connectors and ribbon cable have already provided a space saving solution.

The advent of multi-gigabit applications including 10, 40, 100 Gigabit Ethernet have led to an explosion in fibre array connections in enterprise networks and Data Centres. These array connections better known as MTP®/MPO, allow multiple fibre strands to be terminated and connected through a single connector interface. The most common MTP®/MPO interface being 12 fibres and to a lesser extent 24 fibre connectors. There is a general lack of certainty in the marketplace around which physical connection scheme should be used, as standards recognize 3 different connection schemes.

What are the main benefits of an MTP®/MPO cabling system?

One of the main benefits of an MTP®/MPO cabling system is its modularity and its ability to provide connectivity supporting high speed links. New links can be easily added and the network can also be upgraded to support higher networking speeds – 40G, 100G, etc. Furthermore, the 12 or 24 fibre ribbon cable construction has a smaller OD than regular fibre optic cable, which reduces cable load in raised floors and cable ducts as well as reducing congestion.

Additionally, all of the components in an MTP®/MPO cabling system are pre-terminated, removing the need for splicing on site and are also factory inspected and tested, ensuring supreme reliability. This enables a true plug and play solution.

Selecting the right MTP®/MPO solution for High Density Data Centres and Enterprise networks

There a number of key factors, which will help network designers and operators select the right solution for their Data Centres. It is important to view the solution benefits and features from end to end.

For instance:

– The solution must support various Polarity options
– The solution uses high quality MTP connectors for reliable optical and mechanical performance
– The solution must be modular and allow for network growth
– The solution must support easy MAC’s
– The solution must be compliant with the relevant standards including the various TIA-568 standards.
– The solution must be high density and optimise rack space in an efficient manner, without compromising cable management and accessibility.
